Box Architecture
Building Design Ireland, March 17, 2000
Box Architecture, which was formed in 1997 by Gary Mongey
and David Dwyer, concentrates mainly domestic works, commercial
work and industrial fit-outs.
This conversion of a garage at Dun Laoghaire into a living
space makes a physical link to the external environment by
extending the horizontal plane of the ceiling beyond the enclosure
and by continuing the floor plane to the exterior. Light penetration
is manipulated throughout the day by the strategic placement
of planes to create what the architects hope will be a "light
time clock".
The project, which won the under £200,000 category in the
Opus Building of Year Awards and a special mention in the
AAI Awards 1999, is typical of the practice's interest in
developing a relationship between the built form and nature.
