Architectural Award Winners Revealed
HOLISTIC was the new buzzword at the presentation of the annual
OPUS Architecture and Construction Awards in Dublin last night.
Over 150 projects were submitted to this year's awards, which
were devised to recognise and acknowledge construction skills
for the first time, in addition to the quality of the architecture.
Over 350 guests from the architectural and construction sector
gathered for their most prestigious industry awards which
were presented by the chairman of the judging panel, award
winning architect Ciaran O'Connor. "This year's entries
displayed imagination, vision and knowledge, combining the
very best of architectural skill and build quality,"
said Mr O'Connor. "To creatively marry old and new, turn
an ugly duckling to a swan and create space in clutter were
among the many challenges met by the award winning projects.
"A photograph
does not always tell the story and the OPUS awards are known
for the rigorous evaluation procedure above and beyond the
paper entry. The criteria played particular emphasis on aesthetic
design, build quality, function ability and sustainability.
All shortlisted projects were visited by the judging panel
to ensure that the original design was supported by good architecture
and build quality," he added.
"The high calibre of entries together with the large
attendance at the award ceremony not only reflects the wealth
of talent in Ireland but also the high value placed on the
OPUS architecture and construction awards," said Garret
Buckley of Expo Exhibitions. "The new project award approach
proved to be a winning combination." Supported by O2,
the awards were staged by the Construction Industry Federation
and Expo Exhibitions, organisers of Plan Expo, the leading
showcase for the built environment. All winning designs of
the Opus awards will be on display at Plan Expo in the RDS
from November 4 to 6.
The 2004 judging
panel with chairman Ciaran O'Connor were Noel Dowley, Roger
Dunwoody, retired MD of Dunwoody & Dobson, Eugene Cleary,
joint MD, Cleary Doyle and Pearse Sutton, founding partner
of O'Connor Sutton Cronin consulting engineers.
A total of 15 project
teams were presented with a winning award across the six set
categories. A number of commended and highly-commended were
also awarded.
