A SPACE FOR REFLECTION
& CONTEMPLATION:
A new study extends a terraced house
A new study extension was cleverly positioned by Box Architecture
in response to the orientation of the site. The new study
occupies the easterly corner of the rear yard and connects
strongly with the existing house to create two significant
void spaces; the two courtyards. A smaller evening courtyard
lies between the existing dining area and kitchen, benefiting
from westerly light. The wall of the new extension replaces
a garden fence to create a sense of intimate enclosure.
The study is an ideal working environment, positioned to look
out over the south-facing courtyard it creates. Full-height
glazed doors are used to maximise light and create an undisturbed
visual and physical link between inside and outside. The view
provided by these doors includes the copper dome of the nearby
church on Rathmines Road, creating an ideal space for reflection
and contemplation. The quality of light in the study is further
improved by the inclusion of a roof-light discreetly located
over the storage wall to the south-west end of the room. Natural
light spills over the top of the joinery element, creating
a beautiful light-filled space, with the source of the light
remaining mysterious and ambiguous. For the owners, a simple
external timber bench in the sunny courtyard garden has become
the perfect place to relax and retreat from their new study.
The strength of the project lies within its use of space within
a restricted site. The owners gained an additional room while,
maximising the quantity and quality of light. The new extension
provides a modern insertion which clearly defines itself as
something new but which responds and reacts to its historical
context.
