The existing bay window was mirrored and the internal spaces opened up to the garden in a modern idiom. The back of the house faces east and we wanted to trap the rising sun within as many rooms as possible.
The ground floor plan is larger than those above and a metal covered shelf was created. By lowering the shelf a clearstory was enabled allowing the morning sun to penetrate deep into the plan to warm one standing in the kitchen area. This canopy further acts as an umbrella from the sun and provides shade to avoid excessive solar gain. The dark band of tiling connects the front door to the rear garden and retains the sun’s heat to offset the large amount of glazing. The design of the doors allows for different opening permutations with a small door affording daily access. Kitchen units are treated in a simple idiom with floor to ceiling storage, when closed concealing the everyday kitchen clutter.
The gable volume allowed for the provision of a third floor level and the creation of double spaces, a study with a mezzanine level doubling up as a guest bedroom and the airy master bedroom. An opaque clearstory on the mezzanine allows the morning sun illuminate the master bedroom.
